Sharing lived experiences of disasters

If you have been affected by the impacts of climate change in the form of disasters (floods, bushfires, cyclones) you are not alone: today’s children and youth are more exposed to the risk of experiencing disasters than previous generations.

Because of this, talking about your experiences can help other young people as a way of helping raise awareness and share important tips on how to deal with such a difficult experience. Sharing your story can also make you feel undestood and less alone. However, these benefits are only possible once you feel ready and motivated to talk about your experiences, you are not obligated to do it! You have the right to decide when, how and where you talk about your personal life, and with whom.

Because disasters can cause serious personal and materials losses, they can affect our mental health. If you or someone you know has been impacted by a disaster, it is important that you take care you youself and are aware of signs that you may need additional professional support.

Youth Views is a resource designed for and by young people who have been affected by disasters.
